The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Northland and Coromandel Peninsula.
It predicts up to 120 millimetres of heavy rain to fall from Thursday night until Friday night.
It warns the weather could cause streams and rivers to rise, and urges drivers to be cautious on the wet roads.
The MetService has also issued a severe weather watch for heavy rain and gales for Auckland, Waikato, Rotorua and Gisborne.
