Critics call ERA ruling a step too far

Critics say an Employment Relations Authority decision ordering a sacked worker to disclose personal information is a step too far.

The ERA has ordered a former Air New Zealand employee to hand over some of her bank records and Facebook pages to verify whether or not she was misusing sick leave.

The Council for Civil Liberties says asking for bank records seems intrusive, and questions how it could be relevant to an employment matter.

A lawyer for the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union said the authority had crossed the line. Greg Lloyd said employers have other ways to find out whether someone is legitimately off-work.
