A man who says he saw his friend hit a security guard over the head with a piece of wood is himself facing charges for an attack on another guard.

The witness has name suppression. He was giving evidence on Thursday at the High Court in Auckland where his friend is charged with the murder of security guard Charanpreet Dhaliwal.

Mr Dhaliwal was found in a pool of blood at a construction site in west Auckland in November 2011.

The witness said he heard a croaking noise before turning to see his friend hit the guard in the head with a piece of wood.

But under cross examination from defence lawyer Michele Wilkinson-Smith, the witness confirmed he was accused of attacking another security guard with his own torch and was in custody.

He also confirmed he was a gang member and had asked police to help him with his bail application if he told them what happened to Mr Dhaliwal.
