Researcher reports high flu burden

An immunisation expert says new information shows there is considerable flu among young children in this country.

Nikki Turner, who heads the Immunisation Advisory Centre at Auckland University, made the comment at a conference on immunisation in Auckland on Wednesday.

Dr Turner is one of the leaders of research project Shivers, which is looking at the burden of flu in Auckland hospitals.

She told the conference early data from the first year of the study has shown a surprisingly large impact on children under one.

Dr Turner said it was higher than what is usually reported internationally.

She said it is well known that the elderly suffer badly from flu, but the result was a surprise.
