Vaccination rise keeps flu cases down

Doctors say the influenza season has been relatively mild overall, despite an unusual late surge in flu cases in Wellington and Canterbury in recent weeks.

A member of the National Influenza Strategy Group, Dr Lance Jennings, says there have still been at least two deaths, but the number of people needing treatment is down on previous years.

He says vaccination remains the best protection and 1.2 million doses have been given this year.

The World Health Organisation's National Influenza Centre director Dr Sue Huang believes the big uptake in vaccination has been a help.

She says last year's season was very severe and there were many hospitalisations in New York earlier this year, helping raise awareness of the situation.

Immunisation Advisory Service head Dr Nikki Turner believes the mild flu season is due to a mixture of pre-existing immunity and the big uptake in vaccinations.
