Conservation Minister Nick Smith has opened a new track to one of New Zealand's highest waterfalls.

The opening is part of commemorations to mark 125 years of the Milford Track in the Fiordland National Park.

Dr Smith says the new $39,000 track through spectacular terrain opens up access to the Sutherland Falls.

The track includes two 40 metre suspension bridges across the upper Arthur River.

Tourism on the Milford Track is estimated to be worth up to $35 million to the economy each year.
