The Government's drug-buying agency, Pharmac, has appointed a senior Wellington gastroenterologist as its medical director.

John Wyeth takes over in January next year from Peter Moodie, who has held the key role at Pharmac for the past 14 years.

Dr Wyeth is a specialist gastroenterologist at Capital and Coast District Health Board and a clinical senior lecturer at the Wellington School of Medicine.

He has also been the clinical head of gastro-intestinal services at Capital and Coast DHB.

Dr Wyeth has been working with Pharmac part-time since November 2012, leading discussions with clinicians over hospital medicines and hospital medical devices which are new areas of work for Pharmac.
