No fishing day at Hawke's Bay reserve

7:16 pm on 17 December 2013

The Department of Conservation says a rumour promoting an illegal open fishing day at a Hawke's Bay marine reserve is not true.

DoC says over the past few days, a number of people have been making inquiries about a supposed fishing day at Te Angiangi Marine Reserve on Wednesday.

The department says it is illegal to take anything from a marine reserve at any time, and anyone caught trying to fish or take shellfish within a reserve boundary will be prosecuted. The offending carries a fine of up to $10,000 or three years in jail.

DoC says the Te Angiangi reserve will be closely monitored on Wednesday.
