Runaway millionaire released

5:32 pm on 23 December 2013

A man who fled from New Zealand with millions of dollars that were credited to his bank account by mistake was released from prison on Monday.

Hui Gao, who was known as Leo, served 16 months in jail after being convicted of defrauding Westpac in 2009, when the bank mistakenly credited him with $10 million.

Gao, 33, has been released on parole under conditions including a curfew, not entering a casino and only operating a bank account approved by a probation officer.

The Parole Board's decision says most of the money he spent overseas went on living expenses and casinos, but Gao was ashamed of how he'd broken the law and gone against his family's values.
