Trampers warned to take care on Cascade Saddle route

5:39 am on 13 January 2014

A search and rescue group is warning trampers preparing to undertake the Cascade Saddle route to take care following a number of deaths on the alpine pass in recent years.

The Cascade Saddle is situated in Otago, between the West Matukituki and Dart Valleys.

Land Search and Rescue spokesperson Phil Melchior says the route has some of the most breath- taking scenery around and involves a vertical climb of about 1800 metres.

He says it is important that trampers attempting the route are prepared for any changes in the weather, and warns it's been the scene of half a dozen deaths in the past 10 years.
