New Zealand on Air says music funded through its Making Tracks scheme have been played nearly 9 million times.

Over the past two years, 330 bands and artists have been funded through the scheme, which provides grants of up to $10,000 for recording a song and making a music video.

New Zealand on Air says the songs it funded have been played 8.8 million times, mostly streamed over the internet using services including Spotify, YouTube and Vimeo.

The figures show local music is getting bigger audiences across a diverse range of media, it says.
