A lobby group says politicians should show restraint about spending public money.
A Fairfax Media Ipsos Poll published this weekend shows nearly 70 percent of those surveyed oppose the Government raising new taxes to fund new spending.
Gabrielle O'Brien of the Taxpayers Union says politicians need to take notice of this because there is a generous tax take in New Zealand already.
She says politicians who go into the election with big spending promises will need to find savings elsewhere or will be punished by the voters.
The group says New Zealanders are already taxed too much.
The Fairfax Ipsos poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
