A bus driver in Auckland has been jailed for nearly three years for killing an elderly man when the bus crashed.

Feuu Leilua, who is 53, lost control of the vehicle in February last year after driving nearly 20 km/h above the speed limit. The bus crashed into a tree, throwing three passengers onto the road, including 88-year-old John Wilkins, who died at the scene.

A 12-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy were also injured.

Initially, Leilua told police the brakes had failed, but an investigation proved that to be a lie.

He was sentenced in the Manukau District Court to two years and nine months' imprisonment for dangerous driving causing death.
