Subway thief granted appeal

A Subway employee, who was jailed for stealing more than $76,000 from his employer, has been granted an appeal.

Joseph Sionetuato was sentenced to 22 months and two weeks in jail in February after pleading guilty in the Wellington District Court to theft by a person in a special relationship.

He was a sandwich maker at a Subway store in Porirua when he was caught taking $400 last August.

The police say that between October 2012 and August 2013, Sionetuato stole hundreds of bags of cash totalling $76,200.

Sionetuato admits to taking the $400 but says he did not understand he was pleading guilty to the other thefts.

Justice Collins quashed the original sentence and released him on bail pending a disputed facts hearing.
