Following a week's delay due to bad weather, demolition of quake-damaged houses on the Port Hills in Christchurch begins on Monday.

A group of houses above the suburb of Sumner will be demolished as a joint job by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, Arrow International and the insurer, Southern Response.

Arrow International said the first properties to be demolished will be the most straightforward jobs on the hills and their destruction will allow access to more challenging houses closer to the cliff's edge.

A spokesperson said the demolition of the first houses is expected to take about 20 working days.
