The Interislander ferry, the Aratere, is returning to New Zealand after leaving Singapore on Saturday night.
The Aratere has been dry-docked in Singapore for repairs after losing a propellor in November last year.
KiwiRail says the repaired ferry will sail to Wellington via Gladstone in Queensland, where it will stop to refuel.
A KiwiRail spokesperson said while the Aratere's return to New Zealand was weather dependent, the ship was expected to be sailing the Cook Strait again by 7 July.
The spokesperson said the Aratere's first week of sailing between the North and South Islands would be for freight only.
