NZ tourist's body found off Gold Coast

8:59 pm on 7 January 2010

The body of a New Zealand tourist has been found washed up on an island off Australia's Gold Coast.

Richard Doyle, 19, who had been holidaying with his parents, had not been seen since going for a swim at Northcliffe Beach, south of Surfers Paradise, at about 7am on Monday.

The discovery of his wallet and clothing on the beach sparked a land and sea search.

Inspector Darren Sopa of the Gold Coast water police says that at first light on Thursday morning a surf rescue helicopter found the body in shallow water near South Stradbroke Island - 15 to 20 kilometres north of where Mr Doyle went missing.

Inspector Sopa says that after a post-mortem has been completed, Mr Doyle's family will be able to take his body home.
