The Department of Corrections is investigating an attack on a prisoner at Rimutaka Prison by another inmate.
The department says the attack took place in the prison's faith-based unit on Sunday afternoon.
Southern assistant regional manager Liz Nielsen says the injured man was immediately taken to hospital.
Police are also investigating.
