A man has been found dead after a house fire in Upper Hutt, near Wellington.

Police were called to Miro Street just before 1am on Saturday where they found a house and attached garage fully alight.

A man was found dead in a sleep-out at the rear of the property, which was also extensively damaged by the fire.

Three other family members are in hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, but police say their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The family that lives in the house includes four children, aged between 3 and 13.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, and police, forensic experts and fire safety staff were to examine the scene over the weekend.
