The Christchurch City Council is investigating allegations of sub-standard welding work on five buildings.

It has been reported in the Christchurch Star the buildings include a multi-level apartment block, three commercial premises and a school.

The council's general manager of consenting and compliance, Leonie Rae, said it had informed all of the building owners of the allegations, and was interviewing them and their engineers.

It was also reviewing documentation attached to the buildings and carrying out its own inspections, she said.

One building has already been surveyed.

The council would not be commenting further while the investigation continued, Ms Rae said.
