Police said the pair set off on the Mingha - Deception Route early yesterday morning, intending to travel to Klondyke Corner.

An associate raised the alarm after the pair failed to make radio contact once they reached Goat Pass hut.

A search and rescue operation and helicopter had been looking for the pair, who police said had not been prepared for an overnight stay.

The helicopter spotted them near the Deception River, and they were being flown out to waiting family at Arthur's Pass.

They were wet and cold but were safe, police said.
