The body, which is believed to have been there for some time, was spotted in a crevasse by a tramper last Thursday, but until now bad weather had prevented recovery efforts.
Police said favourable conditions today allowed a helicopter to land very close to the scene and a team retrieved the body with no complications.
The body was being taken to Christchurch for a post-mortem and formal identification.
