The Springston Hotel, near Lincoln, was robbed some time after 10.30pm last night by a man who fired two shots into the air and ran off with cash, police said.

It's the sixth hotel or bar in the city to be the target of an aggravated robbery this year.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said the man managed to evade a police dog before escaping.

Mr Sweeney said people working in retail, banking and hospitality needed to be vigilant and report any suspicious transactions or bookings.

Police were committed to holding the offenders to account, he said.

Last month the police said 20 staff, including a team of detectives, were working to solve the string of robberies.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Christchurch Police or Crimestoppers.
