Cordons have been lifted in central Wellington after two buildings were evacuated because of an incident at a building near Parliament.

Hundreds of people had to leave Rutherford House, which is part of Victoria University's downtown campus, and the central bus station.

A police officer at the scene said the university had received a threat in the form of a letter.

A large part of the central city, including sections of the busy Molesworth and Featherston Streets, went into lockdown for more than two hours while the buildings were searched.

However, the cordons have now been relaxed and traffic can drive through as usual.

Wellington's central bus terminal was also evacuated with buses diverted to Lambton Quay, but it was now operating normally.

The evacuation order was still in place for Rutherford House.
