Zhenghang Yu had pleaded guilty to killing 16-year-old Jacob Pakura in New Lynn.

Yu, a Chinese national who worked as a truck driver, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

After the sentencing in the Auckland District Court today, Detective Sergeant Ash Matthews said Mr Pakura's family had been living their "worst nightmare" over the past seven months.

"We can only hope that today's sentencing will help provide some degree of closure for them," Mr Matthews said.

The help of the Waitakere community in the investigation was outstanding and led to Yu's arrest, he said.

"While it should go without saying, we would remind everyone that it is your responsibility, if you are involved in an any kind of accident, to always stop and check on the welfare of everyone involved."

Yu was also disqualified from driving for four years.
