That comes only a month after concerns were raised about a summer law camp for second year students, with complaints about past camps involving excessive drinking, nudity and jelly-wrestling.

This year's camp was subsequently cancelled.

Otago University confirmed Prof Henaghan was stepping down as dean, although it said he would continue to work at the university until the end of the year when he moves to Auckland.

It would not say if Prof Henaghan's stepping down as dean had anything to do with the public backlash over the summer camps.

RNZ approached Prof Henaghan for comment.
