Police are refusing to explain how the public can feel safe despite claiming on Sunday that the person responsible for shooting a man in Invercargill is still on the loose.

For the past two days RNZ has been promised an update on the shooting, which occurred on Saturday morning, but none has been forthcoming.

A man was shot while walking his dog in the city on Saturday morning, suffering moderate injuries as a result.

This morning police provided a written statement in response to queries, but did not address how the public can feel safe if the shooter remains at large despite claiming on Sunday several times there is not thought to be any risk to the public.

The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition with moderate injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said police would update the media when more information can be shared.

This story has been corrected from its original publication. An earlier version incorrectly linked the shooting to a 66-year-old Southland man killed in a car crash. RNZ apologises for the error.
