A man charged over the death of a baby in Kaitaia has made his first court appearance.

The 22-year-old appeared in Kaitaia District Court this morning charged with the murder of Maree Takuira Mita Ngahere.
He has been granted interim name suppression.
The baby, aged less than four weeks old, was found dead of head injuries at her home in Kaitaia on 19 February.
The accused man has also been charged with assaulting another child, aged one year, in Manurewa earlier this year.
He was remanded in custody to appear in the High Court at Whangarei on 21 March.
