One person died when a house burned to the ground in the Bay of Plenty.
Fire crews were was called to the property in the small town of Ruatahuna, near Te Urewera, at 2am, a spokesperson for Fire and Emergency said.
Five fire trucks and two fire investigators were at the Mataatua Road property.
A second person person from the house was taken to hospital in a moderate condition, police said.
Police are working with Fire and Emergency to determine the cause of the fire.
