Explosion at Petone battery recycling plant

3:13 pm on 1 May 2009

An explosion has shaken a battery recycling plant in Petone, near Wellington.

The explosion, shortly after midday on Friday, is thought to have come from a furnace at the Exide Technologies factory, and shattered windows nearby.

Police and fire officers were called and the factory, which has been evacuated. There are no reports of injuries

The explosion is thought to have come from a furnace room. Exide says two workers were in the room at the time but neither was hurt.

It is believed that molten lead or slag coming into contact with water after being spilt on the floor is likely to have caused the explosion.

Occupational Safety and Health is investigating.
