Waikato police tackle school truancy

5:46 am on 12 June 2009

Waikato police have launched an initiative to help combat truancy in the region.

Police statistics show that a quarter of daytime offending in the centre of Hamilton is carried out by children who are supposed to be in school.

The initiative will involve the police working with schools, attendance officers and other agencies, visiting parents whose children are truants.

The situation will be reassessed at the end of the school year.
