Investment property interest appears on the wane

There are new signs New Zelanders' love affair with property investment may be waning.

An annual property survey commissioned by website realestate.co.nz suggests that, for the first time in several years, the number of people wanting to invest in housing has declined significantly.

Last year, one in four of those surveyed intended buying housing as a future investment, but this year only one in seven people said they wanted to put their money into property.

Realestate.co.nz chief executive Alistair Helm says there is also a very clear intention among investors who already own property to hold onto it rather than sell.

Mr Helm says the intention to sell among investment property owners showed a more than 40% decline on last year.

The survey of about 1200 people has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.86 percentage points.
