The Defence Force is en route to Ashburton to dispose of a suspicious item that Police say resembles an unexploded ordnance.

In a statement, police said a suspicious item resembling an unexploded ordnance was found earlier this afternoon at a residential Elizabeth Street property in Allenton, Ashburton.
A police spokesperson said the area has been cordoned off and nearby properties have been evacuated.
Police advised members of the public to avoid the area while the incident is resolved.
The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been notified and are en route.
Police said further updates would be provided when available.
