Five pet cats have been killed by roaming dogs in the East Auckland suburb of Glen Innes.
The community has expressed outrage over the killings and says stray dogs are becoming an increasing problem.
Auckland Councillor for the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward Josephine Bartley said people were not only worried about their pet cats, but also walking their dogs and their children's safety due to the stray dogs.
"With people posting online about how they're too scared to walk in the park because of these roaming dogs."
Bartley said stray dogs were a major problem in her area, as well as in some other parts of the city.
People had taken on dogs as pets but not looked after them nor kept them on their own properties which resulted in the large numbers of roaming dogs, she said.
The council had increased animal patrols in Glen Innes due to the concerns that were being reported, she said.
"People need to look after their dogs better and if they can't look after them, then do something about it, but don't just leave them to roam around the streets like this."
