Housing NZ backs down over rubbish bag stickers

4:44 pm on 11 August 2011

Housing New Zealand has been quick to back down on a move to stop its normal practice of forwarding council rubbish bag stickers to its tenants in Gisborne.

The Gisborne District Council issues stickers, each for 5kg of rubbish, with its rates invoices.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the council said Housing New Zealand had decided not to pass on the stickers because it wanted instead to focus on tenancy and asset issues.

The council said it was concerned that rubbish from Housing New Zealand properties may start to pile up and some could end up dumped at beaches and reserves.

Housing New Zealand on Thursdsay afternoon apologised for any inconvenince to its tenants, saying it will be distributing the stickers immediately.
