Company targets Americans for cheap NZ operations

An Auckland-based company is marketing New Zealand as a top destination for cheap medical procedures.

Medtral, set up in September 2007, is aiming to attract people from the United States.

The company website says New Zealand offers top-quality healthcare in an English-speaking First World country.

A shareholder in the company, Dr Edward Watson, says the potential for medical tourism is enormous.

He says it will not affect public health care because there is enough capacity in the private sector in the short term.
