Tougher driving test starts on Monday

The last of the Government's moves to make younger drivers safer on the roads comes into effect on Monday with the introduction of a tougher restricted driving test.

Last year, the Government also increased the driving age to 16 and banned teenage drivers from drinking alcohol.

More than 700 teenagers died on the roads over the past decade.

New Zealand has highest road death rate in the OECD for 16 and 17 year olds.

The length of the new driving test will more than double from 20 to 45 minutes and the Transport Agency says teenagers will have to drive for at least 120 hours before they will be able to pass.
