PNG's Prosecutor's Office to study court decision dismissing Somare's appeal

Papua New Guinea's Public Prosecutor's Office says it will study a court decision dismissing an appeal by Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare over a Ombudsman Commission referral.

The Post Courier reports the Office as saying they were yet to get a copy of the decision because the file is still in the Judge's chamber.

The Office also confirmed there was no court order preventing it determining whether the Chief Justice could be advised to appoint a leadership tribunal.

Reports say the tribunal would inquire into the alleged breaches of the Leadership code by Sir Michael.

The Public Prosecutor's Office says if it agreed to advise the Chief Justice to appoint a tribunal, the leader would be given three days' notice in advance

An earlier National Court decision ruled in favour of the Ombudsman Commission's constitutional powers to refer Sir Michael to the Public Prosecutor for alleged breaches of the leadership code - something which the leader appealed against.
