Police checks on youth justice placements extended

6:07 pm on 1 July 2012

The Green Party is claiming victory following a move by the Social Development Minister to initiate police checks on family group conference placements that pre-date a rule change.

Child Youth and Family has apologised to a young Taranaki woman who was placed in the care of a convicted rapist in 2001 after a family group conference.

The rules were changed this year, so that police checks are made on all family conference placements.

But checks are now extended to placements made since 2009.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei says the change was made after she questioned the Minister in the House about the matter on Tuesday.

She says it's good news for children and young people placed away from their parents through a youth justice programme.

Mrs Turei says she's happy the Government has taken notice of the request to go back and run checks on those missed.
