Finance Minister Bill English says the Government will make another announcement this week, in what will be a series of initiatives aimed at increasing the housing supply.
Last week a community consortium announced plans to build nearly 300 houses for first-home buyers and low-income renters on a South Auckland site, the first development under the Government and Auckland Council's Housing Accord.
Mr English says the Government's intention is that thousands of new houses will be built in special housing areas over the next three years in Auckland.
He says the Government has the opportunity to be the biggest supplier of newly developed, medium density housing, and the Weymouth type of development will become more common.
