Review of court media guidelines timely

8:52 am on 3 April 2014

Attorney-General Chris Finlayson says a review of in-court media guidelines is timely after an allegation that a journalist met a lawyer during a trial adjournment in order to "spice things up" for the evening news.

He did not say when the trial occured or the names of the journalist and lawyer.

The allegation was passed on to him but no formal complaint was made.

Mr Finlayson said the media plays an important role but must be balanced and accurate in its court reporting.

Guidelines for in-court media coverage are currently being reviewed and the Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias has released a consultation paper that looks at how the guidelines could be changed.
