New MP won't quit councillor job

7:29 pm on 10 November 2008

New Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says he will stay on as an Auckland city councillor, describing the role as a two-day-a-week job.

Mr Lotu-Iiga says there is no conflict in being an MP and councillor because as the elected member for Maungakiekie he is still serving the same people.

But some of his fellow councillors say his comments are disrespectful to them as local body politicians, and he has misrepresented himself to the ratepayers who voted him in.

Cathy Casey says city councillors work long hours to serve ratepayers effectively.
