Whangarei has been a safe National seat since 1975, and the present MP Shane Reti had a 13,000 vote majority at the last election.

Mr Savage said he would bring a business focus to the political arena.

He would like to see Whangarei with lower unemployment, fewer housing problems and better health, he said.

Local community activist and designer Ash Holwell has been picked to run as ehe Green Party's candidate.

Mr Holwell ran for mayor in Whangarei 2016 with a strong focus on the arts.

New Zealand First has yet to name its Whangarei candidate, but former Labour MP Shane Jones has been widely tipped for the role.
