Flames could be seen coming through the roof of the restaurant, which caught fire just after 2pm.

Staff and customers were evacuated safely and no one was injured.

Train services between Silverstream and Upper Hutt Stations were cancelled for a period but have now resumed, although the trains were running at a reduced speed as a precaution.

The Fire Service communications centre could not confirm to RNZ this afternoon whether or not Fergusson Drive, near the McDonalds, was closed, because that would be decided by their staff on the ground. But businesses nearby said a lot of traffic had backed up.

Students at Saint Patrick's College across the road did not need to evacuate and a Year 9 function this evening would go ahead, with parents able to access the school via back roads.

Staff at the Silverstream Golf Centre said they saw flames coming out the roof of the McDonalds this afternoon. There was still some smoke visible about 4pm.
