More dairy farms cop hefty effluent fines

7:02 am on 5 July 2012

Two more Bay of Plenty dairy farming operations have received hefty fines for unlawful effluent discharges.

Both cases involved breakdowns in travelling irrigators used to spray effluent onto pastures on dairy farms.

Maori farming incorporation Orete 2, based at Waihau Bay on the East Coast, was fined $45,000 after effluent flowed into a stream.

Two Galatea dairy farmers, Eric and Michael Steiner, were fined a total of $40,000 for allowing effluent to contaminate a waterway after an irrigator breakdown.

The latest fines follow the $72,000 effluent penalty imposed in Bay of Plenty last week on a large dairy farming company, Armer Farms.
