KVH meets Waikato kiwifruit growers about PSA

10:13 am on 6 September 2012

Representatives from Kiwifruit Vine Health will meet growers in Waikato on Thursdayto update them on initial results from its investigation into how PSA arrived in the region.

The vine-killing bacterial disease was last month confirmed for the first time in Waikato. It has been found on two orchards near Te Awamatu.

KVH chief executive Barry O'Neil says all infected Hort 16A gold vines were immediately cut out and buried.

He says all blocks of kiwifruit within a 12 kilometre zone around the infected orchards are being constantly monitored and no new infected orchards have been found.

In some orchards the green variety is still coming out of dormancy so signs of PSA may not be obvious at this stage, he says. More signs of the disease may become evident in coming weeks as the sap starts to flow.

Mr O'Neil says growers are also working to protect their orchards with the use of copper sprays.

The meeting with growers at the Waipa Working Men's Club in Te Awamutu begins at 3pm on Thursday.
