Truck drivers, farmers and sharemilkers are being urged to keep stock effluent off the road in Otago.
Some of the hazards which can occur when effluent spills from stock trucks include motorists having their windows splattered and vision reduced, motorcyclists skidding, and road markings being completely covered.
Otago Regional Council, Federated Farmers, transport agencies and the police have formed a working party to find a solution to problem.
Council resource management director Selva Selvarajah said there are a few simple things the council is asking farmers and truckies to do.
Farmers are being asked to stand the stock overnight before they transport the stock to other farms.
Mr Selvarajah said truck drivers are being asked to ensure there is storage on board to collect effluent and to use the regional council's effluent collection facilities to empty their storage tanks on the way to the farms.
He said councils have gone to the effort of installing seven stock effluent dumping sites in the region and they want trucking firms and farmers to play their part and use them.
