Kiwifruit growers see glimmer of light ahead

Zespri says kiwifruit growers battling the PSA vine disease for the past few years are starting to adopt a more positive outlook.

The feedback came from kiwifruit orchardists who attended grower meetings at the National Agricultural Fieldays near Hamilton last week.

Zespri chief executive Lain Jager says the future for many growers is beginning to look brighter, with returns up, the hot dry summer reducing the impact of Psa, and the new G3 gold kiwifruit variety holding up so far against the bacteria.

But, he said, best of all for growers is the fact that orchard property values are recovering.
