New law to be used for whey contamination inquiry

6:35 am on 23 August 2013

New legislation updating the law covering public and government inquiries will be put to immediate use for a government inquiry into the Fonterra whey protein contamination incident.

The Inquiries Bill was passed in Parliament on Thursday.

Fonterra itself is running two levels of investigation and the Primary Industries Ministry also has a regulatory review underway.

Following the botulism contamination alert, Fonterra has introduced additional quality assurance measures at its nutrition plants, that will involve further checking and servicing of all equipment and processes.
