Dairy lobby backs Govt on freshwater changes

6:35 pm on 11 November 2013

Dairy NZ says it supports the Government's proposed changes to the way freshwater in the country is managed.

The dairy sector's industry-good body says water is fundamental to all New Zealanders' way of life - and underpins the nation's economy.

It says the proposed framework comes with some clear bottom lines for ecosystems and human health and farmers are willing to step up and play their part in taking action on water quality.

Some scientists and environmental groups are concerned that the proposed new system doesn't measure the impacts of pollution on fresh water insects and fish - that they say are key indicators of waterway health.
